The ACE Collaboration

This is a major UK based project with links to the Friends group which is working towards linking individuals, groups and organizations in the UK with Grandsons and its wider community. Currently all funds raised by the Friends group are earmarked for the project. So what is it exactly?

Organiser Ann Ruscillo writes;

‘The ACE Collaboration is a three-strand project which covers Arts, Construction and Enterprise. Its overall aim is to bring a diverse range of young people together, through the sharing of their talents and skills. Many young people feel excluded from “mainstream” life because of a number of reasons. It may be that they find themselves on the “outside” because of social prejudice, juvenile crime, their own thoughts and fears, or an illness, which stops them from living a full, enriched life. Our aim through the ARTS strand of the project is for those young people to integrate through song writing and art. Through a series of workshops we would like to give those young people the chance to express themselves, on their terms, and have work shown through the medium of Internet Technology. Through the ENTERPRISE strand of the project we would like to encourage our mainstream partners to support the Arts strand, by assisting in the Arts workshops, and updating the web page on a regular basis.

The more immediate Strand is the CONSTRUCTION strand. We have enlisted the help of 8 Construction Students and 2 tutors from Yale College Wrexham, to join us for the whole of August 2008 in the constructing of a dining room and kitchen at the Grandsons Kikambala Farm site. They are a fantastic bunch of young people who are desperate to get out there and do their job. They will also be getting involved in daily life with the young people who live at Grandsons permanently. It is however going to be hard work for everyone, and that hard work starts here. All in all this one strand of the project will cost over £40,000 to finance. Lots and lots of people are doing their best to try and raise the money. Can you help? Please browse the Grandsons site to see the good work which is already being done, and to find out how you can help. Every little counts! We will keep you updated on our progress, not only of the CONSTRUCTION Strand, but also of the Arts and Enterprise strands as well.

This is a major undertaking to try and complete one of the developments at Kikambala outlined in the plans shown above. After much consideration as to need, time available and budget, the kitchen and dining hall was identified as the best option. Be assured that all costs for materials, expertise, machinery, accommodation, travel and food are to be sourced from the UK, so posing no burden on Grandsons…but it is a HUGE budget and in the coming months the Friends group will be concentrating on fundraising for this project.

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE consider helping out with this fundraising, whether it be a few pounds out of your pocket, a fundraising event, letters to individuals or organizations who could donate…whatever you can think of (as long as it’s legal!). Every penny that is earmarked for the build will go directly to it, with no admin or other costs removed.
